Biography
Ellen van Neerven is an award-winning writer of Mununjali Yugambeh and Dutch heritage who is queer and non-binary. Their first poetry collection, Comfort Food, about sharing food and a colonized land, won the Tina Kane Emergent Award. Throat, their explosive second poetry collection, which explores love, language and land while shining a light on Australia’s unreconciled past and precarious present, won the Kenneth Slessor Prize, the Multicultural NSW Award and Book of the Year in the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards. “Throat is a brave and radical work,” wrote the Sydney Review of Books, which requires “a suspension of western
realism, history, temporality, literary conventions and values, binaries and expectations.” Van Neerven became known as an up-and-coming writer when their first work of fiction, 2015’s Heat and Light, won several awards. In 2019 they won the Queensland Premier's Young Publishers and Writers Award.
